My 2017 F-250 didn't come with an OEM remote start. I shopped around and it seemed I didn't have any options other than paying hundreds of dollars to have a 3rd party install a kit and end up with another key fob to carry around. Then I found Kicky Ride - they offer a simple pre-made inline kit that allows you to use your OEM remote fob to remote start your vehicle.
My OEM fob is the typical FORD 3 button flip key (lock/unlock/alarm). With this kit installed, I'm able to use the lock/unlock/lock combination to remote start the truck. The default run time is 15 minutes but if you have some technical aptitude, you can program to run for 30 minutes. It also saves your last good climate control setting, so if it's freezing cold out and you have the heater on when you turn it off, it'll come back on when you remote start again. Same applies to the AC. For additional security, if you unlock the vehicle and open the door, the vehicle shuts off.
I stumbled on the video/install demo on youtube. You can find the kit on amazon for under $125. Simple inline kit for the OBDII interface - takes all of 10 minutes or less to install.
I found this the other day and ordered one. Didn't know about opening door and it stops though. Bummer - anyway to over ride that "feature"? I found another solution at 12voltsolutions.com but it ran around 249. I guess if I don't like, I will return since it is from Amazon and get the other solution. Thanks for the video...I will watch.
I ordered the Start-x brand off of Amazon for $105 and it has worked great for the few weeks I have had it. Super easy install and the truck stays running when the door is opened.
here is the actual ford one, I purchased an open box for 100 on ebay.. No engine cutoff when opening the door and works the same (lock/unlock/lock).....
This kit looks identical to my "12volt sloutions" kit only $100 cheaper. When I first installed mine (12v) I noticed a different manufacturers name on the brain box.....Googled it and found a ton of them on e-bay for $89.99 under this different name, I was tempted to return mine and buy the other one, but I decided to keep it because of 12v's customer service and warranty. Its still working fine after three years......so who knows.
Hey cmalberto. I accidentally found this page on a google search. This system is not defaulted to shut down the engine with the door opening. But, this option can be enabled through programming. So it sounds like it may have been set by accident.
You'll want to change the 'take over' option to 'enabled'.
Also, regarding other brands, there are a few different types of modules. Most are using a kit from another maker that we do not like. It's overly complicated and a little clunky in my opinion. Some are using the same hardware platform that we use but our firmware is a little different. Especially in regards to the types of long range remotes and smartphone control upgrades available. 12VS seems to use a mix of the 2 modules I mentioned.

Hope this helps everyone!
Cheers!
after installing I found this correctly configured to being able to open doors without shutting down the engine. All is well. I also liked being able to change to lock-unlock-lock configuration so that the horn does not honk when requesting a remote start.
