Remote Start

I performed a search yestderday of the 1987 - 1996 F150 & Larger F-Series Trucks section for remote start and didn't find what I was looking for.

What system do you guys recommend that is compatible with my 92 which has power locks. I would like to add remote start and remote lock/unlock to my truck. I would also like to retain placing my key into the ingnition after remote starting, or atleast the ability to start using the key.

Has anyone done this? Are there any how to's?

Your best bet I would think is any decent aftermarket remote start system/alarm/remote lock unlock I added an alarm with remote lock unlock on my 93, I skipped the remote start as I don't have a need for it. I'm a commercial/industrial electrician so it was a pretty easy install for me but some people may find it complicated.
If you go that route I'd suggest finding a wiring diagram for your truck and also doing as much reading as possible online to help understand the proper way to install such a system. (how to properly solder the wires for a no fail connection, etc)

Or find an installer to put it in.

Wayyy too cheap of an individual to pay someone to install. I can solder if needed but I have grown a strong preference for the crimp connectors with the heat shrink waterproof (resistant) casings. They’re pretty decent especially with a ratcheting crimp tool. What brand remote lock did you choose?

I’m looking for recommendations on a particular kit and model # along with any how to’s someone may have previously done on here or another ford forum for our trucks.

I have gotten spoiled rotten by the remote start in my daily driver and I think this truck (as my baby) deserves the same amount of warm up time especially in the winter. Remote starting your truck from the tree stand with it parked underneath as I used to be able to hunt is the ****!

I would be interested in checking out your dual battery install.

I installed a Viper 3100v, they also make a version with everything you are looking for though I dont know the model# I didn't use crimp connectors, I barrel cut the insulation, separated the strands of wire, inserted the new wire, twisted and soldered then wrapped each connection with self fusing rubber tape.

The 2nd battery is to run my ham radio gear and add on's. It is a 35 amp hr sealed battery Could go larger or even a small car battery.

I tried assembling a kit on Viper's website and just got confused. How do I know if the kit come with whatever to actuate my power locks with a clicker?

take a look at this. As I am not familiar with the power lock systems on Ford trucks I can't be too much help there. I added my own actuators. Like I said, I added an alarm system/starter kill/remote power locks, my kit was pretty simple, just had to order my actuators and install them then wire it up.

I've always used Bulldog Security systems in my vehicles. Strangely enough they don't list remote starters with door unlock? BUT....they do list them on Amazon.

Pretty simple to install, usually an afternoon kind of thing. So far I've installed 5 of them. Currently in my '95 F150 which didn't come with remote locks. But starts and unlocks it fine.

I was leaning towards viper just because it is such a brand name. I know 92/93 didn't have a remote lock function/option but I imagine the module just sent a pulse and as long as the bulldog unit sends the pulse it will unlock.

Freightrain,

Walk me through your install and how you start your truck. Photos from you and Zombie F150 of where you connected into your wiring harnesses and what color wires to look for would be awesome.

1. Do you just remote start and get in and go or do you have to insert your key into the ignition once it is already running, imagine you turn it to run without turning further to start.

2. Can you just hop in and start with your key if wanted?

Get a haynes manual, it will have the wiring diagram for the truck and tells you the color of the wires to need to hit. A Multi meter is handy also. the hardest part on my install was tapping the dome light circuit wire, If I recall correctly I had to tap it back in the corner of the cab and run it under the door sill plate. When I did my install I bought rolls of primary wire in case I needed to extend the wiring (I did have to) and also because I was installing door actuators. Other than that it was pretty simple.

The haynes manual was the key. I took a piece of paper and listed the wiring from the unit on one side and the corresponding wiring colors from the truck on the other and checked them off as I made the connections.

I have the haynes but nothing beats ACTUAL Photos or a decent Youtube. Did you use the dome light circuit wire as a constant power source or was that apart of your alarm function?

it is part of the alarm trigger. I can't take photos of my install as everything it tucked up and hidden well under the dash and out of the way. Thats why I suggested writing out what wires you are using from unit to where it goes on the truck. there are entirely too many variables in units to do a simple one size fits all "How to" for after market installs like this.

I installed a Crimestopper remote start/keyless entry unit in my '90 F-150 last year and have been very happy with it. It has separate lock/unlock buttons, remote start and accessory buttons. It won't affect how your vehicle starts with the key, either. Plan on the better part of a day to install everything, and download a wiring color code chart to make things easier. The only problem I had in installing it was that the power door lock wires in the kick panel didn't work as they were supposed to. I ended up feeding the trigger wires into the passenger door and splicing into the wiring directly off the switch. Other than that, it was a fairly straight forward install and works well (and it's pretty cheap).

Did anyone need anything to reverse the polarity of the door locks. I keep seeing stuff about this on Fords when I google to learn. Also on Fullsizebronco I saw something about using a ford Taurus one touch window module on an accessory button or truck release button. Anyone on here try that maneuver? I pulled some info on wireing from the bulldog website. Seems like the hard part will be purchasing a kit that includes a diagram of its wires.
