I've got a 2000 F-250 with about 225k on the clock. I've only had her a few years, so I'm not so sure when the last time the fluid in the tranny was done. I want to take care of her so she lasts. So my question is, what is the best way to service the transmission? I've read some posts and I'm not sure if I have to change the fluid in the torque converter, or just whats in the sump. I was going to change the filter too. How much fluid do I need? I've read so many different volumes and ways of going about this that I'm a bit confused. I'm no expert mechanic, but I love getting dirty and learning how to do tasks to take care of my truck. So any help that can be offered would be much appreciated. Hope I don't come off as a complete schmuck! Thanks!
Thanks Seville. Much appreciated. One thing I did forget to mention is that sometimes when I put the truck into park, it doesn't actually go into park. It will roll. I really have push it up really far to ensure it is in park. Will changing the fluid help fix this problem?
To fix not going into park, get a #30 Torx driver. Crawl under the dash and look back up the steering column. There are two #30 Torx bolts that hold the shift cable bracket to the column. They are loose. Tighten them.
