Idling issues

So i have a 95 and within the last few days its developed a problem that i cant really identify. I was hoping you all could lend a hand.

My truck idles and starts normally but when i shift from park to reverse or from drive to reverse it idles down below normal rpm and then dies. Afterwards its hard to crank. I have no idea as im not a certified mechanic in any capacity and its worrying me. Any help would be much appreciated

Welcome to FTE

Late model vehicles have lots of software and computers, what you want to do generally is see if you can pull some codes. Some of the auto parts stores have code readers they will test "for free", they aren't usually as comprehensive as what the dealerships have but they could get you pointed in the right direction. There's a method to their madness, they hope or figure you'll buy some parts. As a practical matter there are some things to check - dirty air filter. There is a mass air flow sensor right behind the filter, these get gummed up in long use, sometimes they need cleaning with a "special" low residue solvent. The thing about computer controls, if their inputs are buggered they won't run right. Garbage in = Garbage out. So things like oxygen sensors and similar have to functioning or the computer or ECU will start commanding goofy fuel trims or "limp home mode" etc.

If it's a 95 Ford (and most others), it still has OBD1 emissions stuff. A lot simpler than OBD2, but not always as effective. You might get a lot better insight if you make another post on the section of this forum that covers those years. Guys in that section will have a lot more detailed information -- again assuming that it's a Ford.

You might want to mention if it happens when it's cold, hot,or both. Plus mention the engineand model that you have.

Good Luck,

hj
