2005 F350 SD w/6.0 198k miles...Started pouring out black smoke with a top speed of about 25 mph...Pulled the code (Back Pressure Sensor) and replaced the sensor...Truck ran good for about 2 weeks and then back to heavy black smoke at which time it flashed the same code (Back Pressure Sensor)...This time I replaced the sensor, tube and electrical connector on the sensor...Again ran great for a while but now back to smoking heavy when I pull off, sometimes it clears up and then other times it starts to sputter and back fire through the breather...Just drove it over to the shop to pull the code again to see if others would show up, same code but truck ran great over and back...I am thinking crack head, bent valve or something mechanical...Truck cranks great, never fails to fire up...What should I be looking at before digging into the heads? Inspected the turbo and it looks to be fine, wheel looks okay and no play in the shaft...Help...
First sensor was purchased at O'Reilly and it did not look the same, center hole was quite a bit smaller so after the second failure I went to Ford...My plan right now is to pull it in the shop in a couple days so we can test compression and maybe pull valve covers to look at the rocker arms and push rods...Been reading a lot about where the rockers and even the rods were breaking...Thanks for the input guys, will post my findings later in the week...
I ran through a couple of EBP sensors on my diesel van. I finally got one to last by insulating it. Not sure about your truck, but it's in a pretty hot spot on my E450.
Make sure you rod out the connection tube to the exhaust manifold to clear any junk. A modified coat hanger works fine.
