I have red fluid leaking out of a tube near the transmission on a 1994 IDI. I just had the power steering pump replaced--could it be related? Wife is not happy.
There is a power steering "cooling loop" and using atf in power steering is pretty standard... unfortunately, none of the system is near the trans. Most likely the cooler lines rubbed a hole in eachother
Power steering is all up front of the engine. It is possible that they bumped a transmission cooling line and that triggered the leak, but if the tube was rusty enough to break, it most likely was on its way out....
Sounds like someone else did the pump for you, you may be able to convince them it was their fault.... or they may point out the line is rusty and they aren't liable.
Yes the pump was replaced at a shop. They also replaced the lower radiator hose. So it could be power steering fluid that is draining out of the tube in front of the transmission?
Don't let dumbdumb kid mechanics work on your mechanical truck. They are only good for plugging things in and looking up codes. They don't know how to turn a wrench.
Apparently the fluid leaked from the Vent/Drain for Flywheel cover. Research indicates that the front pump gasket or seal may be leaking, I recently changed the starter--any possible connection? I put two quarts to Mercon V in to the transmission and was able to drive the truck for a short time. The transmission shifts into reverse reluctantly and shifts into drive more easily. Since I don't know how many miles are on the replaced transmission, not sure is I want to invest is having the seal replaced. Anyone know how much replacing the seal costs?
when the E4OD over heats it's known for Puking Fluid out the front seal, sometimes they kinda fix themselves but if it a continuous thing then you probably gonna have to replace the seal....( this means dropping the tranny)
I don't see how it can be related to just changing the starter
I have seen these transmission loose front seals instantly. My 94 did when I was moving hay. The seal showed no signs of any deterioration. No bushing issues. Swapped the seal and have been going ever since.
Been awhile but I am thinking it was a seal you install dry. Make you use something like nonchorinated brake cleaner and blow the sealing surface dry. Don't use a rag and wipe it off.

Reason: adding info
If you have to drop the transmission to replace the front seal you MAW rebuild the entire thing. E4ODs don't have a reputation for being all that strong.
