I have a 95 F150 with a 4.9 that when fired up cold makes what I think is lifter noise it usually goes away within a 1/4 mile of driving. It sounds exactly like this video.
I've replaced the lifters and cam but resued the pushrods and rocker arms since they looked fine. Engine runs good has 55 lbs oil pressure when cold and 21-29 when hot in the Texas summer. Anyone have any ideas?

That sounds like the smog pump to me, but hard to tell in the video. You can take a long screwdriver or pipe or hose and place it on the pump to see if you hear it. If it is going South you will be able to tell. Also you can listen to other components for a clue. As always, be very careful of the fan blade. Also it looked like your CEL was on in the video. Is it on all the time? Sandy
Hey sandy the truck in the video isn’t mine it’s just making the exact same noise as my truck. My smog pump is new as of 6 months ago due to it squealing and I don’t have any check engine lights or codes when I attached the reader I’m puzzled. Thanks

Another reason I suspect the pump is, as I understand, it only works until the engine warms up some. You indicated your noise goes away shortly after start up. Unfortunately, a lot of parts of the offshore origin are bad from the beginning or fail shortly thereafter. I would listen to it and then again when the noise goes away. How did you get your oil pressure numbers? Do you have an aftermarket gauge? Sandy
Hmm. I have an aftermarket auto meter oil pressure gauge not the idiot light haha. So I know my oil pressure is up to par. I’ve heard this noise with the old smog pump and the new one that’s the only reason I’m skeptical of that but that’s still possible.

Very possible and if you hear it now very probable. Your pump may still be under warranty. Sandy
Hmm the noise does seem to be related to oil changes becuase I just finished my 500 mile cam break in and after chaging the oil the knock was defnetely more noticeable and it did seem to be going away as the oil got more usage.
What filter are you using? The oil will drain out of the filter on a 300 if using a filter without an anti-drain back valve. If that happens the pump will need to fill the filter before it starts lubing the engine.
I'm using shell rotella 10w30 with the motorcraft fl-1a and I even have an oil filter adadpter from ford racing that flips the oil filter 90 degrees so its upside down to prevent filter drian back.
Just wanted to update this post. The noise esssentially went 99% away after the oil got about 500 miles on it. In that time the smog pump started making a diffrent knocking noise so I got it warrantied. After running the oil for 3k I changed the oil and the knocking came back again., This is a common thing that seems to happen with the 4.9. Love the truck and motor just wish I could fiqure out what causes the noise it drives me crazy!
