Unhappy 1985 300 clatter

I have a 1985 Ford F-150 2wd 300. Bought in January of 2004. Since I have had the truck, I have always heard a loud ticking noise, especially when the engine is warmed up. It can be heard both at idle and at cruising speed. I went from 10w-30 Motorcraft to a 15w-40 Motorcraft oil, and that didn't help much. It isn't anything in the crankcase, sounds like it could be a lifter? I have been told that it could be a plugged/broken lifter, or that the camshaft could be going flat. Any ideas?

Sounds (pun) like a lifter to me.
Try doing an Engine Flush when you do the oil change.
It'll free up crud over time.

Unhappy

Have ran ATF through engine for the last 3 oil changes, have had no success. How well does the engine flush work?

Well I have two high mileage vehicles. The 300 used to give me some lifter noise and never does anymore. My other car, a Pontiac V8 didn't make noise and after using the flush for maybe 3 times I got a god-awful lifter noise, just one lifter, and it would never go away. I was patient, not thrilled about changing the lifters. All of a sudden, like after a month, the noise went away. So I believe the flush loosened some crud and that got stuck in the lifter, eventually to dislodge itself. I'm pretty much a believer, but have no scientific proof.
