I took Ole' Betsy out for a joy spin the other day. She preformed wonderfuly. I started her up today though, and I heard a dreaded noise I used to get all the time...
a ticking sound. I cannot figure out what in the world it is, but as my RPM's accelerate, the ticking increases. I'm not that bright with trucks just yet, and I figure it's probably something really simple ya'll would know. So help me out here please.. What in the world is this noise? She runs BEAUTIFULLY but she has over 200K miles.
I used to get this noise a lot, not too long after I bought the truck, but then the noise disapeared. I don't know what to think.
I hope whatever goes isn't too expensive. I've been out of work for a while. It's a 94 f150 300 I6
Edit: Something weird. Sometimes when I start the truck and the ticking comes alive, it'll go away if I just let it sit there.

My dad suggested it could be a lifter. What does this mean for me if it is? What does a lifter do, and what do I have to do to fix it or replace it?
Thanks for the responce
If it is a lifter or lifters, it/they could need replacement.
Basically, a lifter sits on a lobe of a camshaft, which in turn pushes a pushrod, which then pushes up on one side of an rocker arm, which opens up both the exhaust and intake valve at different times, of each cylinder.
I'd suggest you get a shop manual or disc for your truck.
You can save a ton of money.
Here are some instructions, but they apply to an 81 F150 4.9.
Maybe you could use it. Good luck.
if your truck has hydraulic lifters (it should) then you'd be best off checking them before replacing them, its possible, even likely, that at 200k a rocker arm has risen a bit. you want a certain amount of preload on the lifters. remove the valve cover, and check the pushrods, if one is loose, spins easily, or has play, tighten the rocker arm until the play is gone, plus a half a turn more. thats a lot easier than replacing all the lifters.
i once put a stainless steel header wrap wire tie on a buddies engine, behind the fan, THAT made a ticking noise... 'bout drove him nuts trying to figure it out... had one on the driveshaft too... ahhh... the good ole days
It -was- in fact overdo. I changed my oil today, and so far no ticking. I'm going somewhere tonight and I'm going to see if I hear it then. Hopefully it's gone. Thank's everyone.
