I'm posting for a friend. Hes got an 82 F150 with a 300 I6. The truck runs like a champ, but it sounds like it has something tapping under the valve cover. What could this be? loose rockers or improperly adjusted valvetrain? I'd check into this but i don't know whether i had to set vavle lash or whatever. thanks in advance!
Unless there has been a cam swap, its got the hydraulic lifters so there is 0-lash. If its tapping it could be a sticky valve or a collapsed lifter or it could even be an exhaust leak at the manifold (look for cracks).
hey vampiro,
my 300 started that knocking sound when cold about 3 oil changes ago. It does it for about 2 minutes and then stops. While its doing it you can rev it up a little and it will go away but come back if idled again until the 2 minutes are up and it goes away. Is this what yours does?
thanks
Josh
no it does it all the time, and is worse the higher the rpms get. its not rod knock, just like the lifters are floating or it has a loose rocker arm. just looking for suggestions before this thing drives me insane! (we go 4 wheeling alot, gets annoying hearing that for a couple hours on end!)
how many miles does it have? mine started doing what vampiro is talking about around 170,000. I had the head rebuilt to solve this problem. it has been my experience that ford engines tend to have a little valve rattle in there older age.
you are on the right track thinking about the rockers and lifters but I think that mine ended up being that the valve just weren't seating good.
if the engine has pretty high milage >120,000 miles you may just be best to look into rebuilding the head.
josh that is exactl;y what mine does. theres a ford part that you place over the oil filter. i lost the number, but i think paul knows what im talking about. i posed a ? about it here a while ago
