acrylic vs alkyd

I was reading a bunch of stuff on the net about the difference between these two paints and they all said that acrylics are all water base. Thats BS. I have been using this type of paint for 40 years https://us.ppgrefinish.com/PPG-Refin...nish/Shop-Line and its not water base. Ask a lady what she uses to take acrylic enamel finger nail polish off with. Water? I have seen the alkyds at places like tractor supply but people complain about fading. So whats the real difference and do you need to clear coat both types?

Who said acrylics were all water base? Someone in a home-forum?

You only "need" to clear coat paints that are designed as a base-coat and require the use of a clear coat. Alkyd is IMO not suitable for clear coating due to its very extended drying periods + the fact that you will be so much better off financially in the long run by just buying the proper base coat. To go even further -> Just avoid alkyd enamel paints all together and live a happier life. They are fine for something that stays inside away from windows, but that's about it.

Acrylic enamels are better than alkyd enamels for wear and UV resistance but are superseded further by acrylic urethane and further yet by polyurethane. With each step up comes more durability and a increased need for proper safety equipment (iso content goes up).

Yes, when talking modern day house paints, acrylic would be water based and alkyd oil based. Outside of that I have no idea. I do know that even auto body shops are being pushed into water based paints, maybe just in CA. Not sure if they refer to them as acrylic. As far as nail polish goes, some women use acrylic nails, and acrylic nail polish could just be nail polish for acrylic nails haha, not likely. Regardless, even a water based paint cant be washed off with water after it dries.

That looks nice!

What brand/line is that?

Don't take this the wrong way; I'm pro acrylic enamel even in light of all the fancier stuff on the market, but the problem with new pics of a fresh job is that even Rustoleum looks show quality if applied correctly.

PPG / Shop Line, from what I gather it is the cheapest of the lines the supplier carries and that is ok on my way over budget project LOL

You are right on "applied correctly" and I don't think some think that.
They have to have a $1000+ HVLP spray guns and the highest end paint and they still have to "cut & buff".
Now in my book you want a "little" orange peel because if too flat it will show every little scratch and that even happens when you wash it.

I got to say this paint flowed out nice and it was the first time I used this HVLP paint gun, Start line 3 gun kit from Eastwood. The last time I painted a full car / truck was back in the mid 80's.
Between then and now I have painted the inside & jambs, engine bay on this truck in the last 2+ years. Primer was with an old school Binks gun.

For a garage paint job on a driver truck I am happy.

Dave, it looks great from here! I have a question on the two-tone paint. Did you spray the center light color first and red later, or vice-versa? Any tips about masking for it? I'm going to be painting mine someday but I've never done two colors before. Thanks!

Sorry for getting back late.
When I learned the trade and red / white colors the white went down first then the red.
This was because of bleed thru, if white went over the red it would turn pinkish so with that in mind I did the white first.
I have also been told it makes no difference but was not going to take that chance.

I them used 1/8" stripping tape to tape the lines for the 2 different colors and used masking paper to cover the white before I sprayed the red.
Sorry for the bad picture

Here you can see the paper still on the rear fenders of my flare side.

Truck almost together

After the not so good first test drive - lost brakes and pulling in the drive clutch linkage broke, this is where it stopped!

I have since put just under 100 miles on the truck since 11/9/19 still have some bugs to work on yet.
Hope to get some better pictures this weekend if the weather is nice.
