My 1991 just turned 100k miles, and I would like to keep this running a few more years. I recently noticed a rough idle when I start and stopped at lights. it takes longer for the engine to start in the morning.
what preventative maintenance should I look at doing? Is there a timing belt I should replace based on the mileage? I recently had a transmission service completed. I need to get new shocks and I have already used this site to pinpoint a clunk I felt when hit the gas. I would appreciate any advice from people that have had their van awhile
What engine do you have? Regardless, if you haven't done a tune up (plugs, wires, filters) in a while, do one. Also, clean the MAF. Some people clean the throttle bodies, but I have never noticed any significant build up there. Cleaning the idle air control valve is another good thing to do. Depending on how much work you want to do, you might consider removing the injectors and getting them cleaned ultrasonically.
Here is my usual plug to check the vacuum lines. A loose vacuum line is a common cause for rough idles as well as the sources listed above. Pull off the rear engine cover and check the tree.
i have a 91 4.0 litre also. mine has 187 thou miles on it. i would change plugs, sparkwires, pcv valve, inline fuel filter,(under the van on the drivers side.)and differential oil.i would definetly change all 4 shocks, especially if yours are original. it would be a good time to check the suspension components for wear, and rear drums for spec. the front sway bar on mine was quite worn, bushings wore out long ago.check air intake throat for deposits, clean it as mentioned. i have never checked my fuel injectors(ultrasonic cleaning) although that would be a good idea. hopfully you will have many more miles motoring. this forum has helped me alot, keeping mine on the road!! good luck! rick
