When I was a Mech I did same same EXCEPT I NEVER charged anyone for a leftover part on or off ticket, I would give it to them for free or if they offered to pay I would point to the coke machine or if they wanted it installed then I would do it off ticket for not much. This ALWAYS paid big dividends in return business. Since I was half owner of the garage me and my partner did a lot of this. Our garage was in an older neighborhood and we had a LOT of older folks stopping in who did not have deep pockets. Treat them right by giving them something for free or extra cheap and they drove so much business to our shop we could not keep up.
Sounds like you ran a great business! Also, thank you for your service to our country! And—love the Texas hill country—go there often as we can!
I already learned to double check the integrity of the oil filter gasket. Got oil and filter from dealer about a week ago to change my oil for first time. Used Ford Pass points so it was kinda free. Changed oil and filter no problem, removed old gasket, lubed new gasket that looked good, screwed on new filter added oil. For next 2 days filter always had a line of oil on side and drip on bottom. Filter was tight. On second day decided to get new filter, took off old one and found chunk missing out of side of gasket and multiple dry rot like cracks in face of gasket. Have never seen an oil filter gasket like this in 30+ years of changing oil. Gasket mating surface also smooth on engine. Must have just been bad gasket. New one is fine. Beware!
I have the same issue on my 2018 6.7. It drips a little down the side of the filter. No matter how tight i get it. So i waited until the next oil change to replace the filter. Nope, same thing. Just a little bit of oil leaks out. I clean the filter off and a few days later there is oil on the side of it again and a few drops on the garage floor. I don't think its the filters, i'm using motorcraft.
A similar situation happen to me but a different part. On my 2017 6.7 F-250 my passenger side battery leaked and corroded the battery clamp. Walked into ford and requested a new clamp for the battery cable. Was told they did not sale them I had to buy the positive terminal battery harness which was somewhere between 300 to 400 dollars. I told the parts guy that surely they sold this clamp by itself perhaps from different vehicle I am sure 90% of ford vehicles use this same style of clamp. He said he could not look it up with out a VIN number because he could only sale parts that matched to vehicles. I left. 10 min later I bought the clamp I was looking for on amazon for 20 bucks. The item said it was for a ford explorer but once I got it was an exact match. So much for customer service.
