Exclamation The kwik filter

I am not sure how many of you have done the kwik filter change, but I found out some not so good info on these filters the other day. I went to the local napa store and got a new one, and the rubber inlet area on it seemed a little different. I didnt really think much of it, put it on, and went on about things. While checking the oil a few days later, the filter had popped off. I tried several times to get it back on, only for it to pop off again. Then I tried using 2 hose clamps, and no dice there either. So, back to napa I go so I can do some brain picking .... turns out, the supplier the filter comes from has re-tooled, and is also using different compounds in the rubber itself -- this leads up to a harder compund that is not going to give as much as the older one, and also has a type of silicone in it as well, making it right near slippery. The end result .... when you start to tighten the hose clamp for the filter, the filter area is retaining its shape, and with the oily surface, it jumps out like a turd with castor oil ... As far as how soon the filter will make it to other areas may be up for debate, but will make it to all stores at one point or another, so inspect the next filter you get and compare it to the one that you have.

Just thought I would pass this along .....

Dang, and I just ordered one a few hours ago. Since this is my first one, what should I look for? Is the rubber stiffer? If this is going to be problem, I will just save my money for a Tymer.

A thought just occured to me, I'll bet a piece of pipe inserted inside the filter like so many of us do would fix the problem. Plus FULLY degreasing the shoulder of the filter and the boot section that goes over it would solve the problem.

I put on a napa filter last week and I used some pipe to connect the hose to the filter since it wouldnt reach. The pipe goes inside both the hose and filter and it seems to be holding up pretty well. I havent had any problems with it yet.

I just tapped a extra piece of 4-inch exhaust down in there and run a bead of silicone around, clamped the tube on and run another bead of silicone around it. After it dried I layed a piece of cardboard over the filter and while the motor was running sprayed ether around all the connection points to check for leaks, and none. I do this about every 7-800 miles just to be safe, haven't had a problem yet. Also got my filter for 26 bucks, its a luber-finer brand though.

I think the reason you've seen a change in the filter is that NAPA buys from low bidder. Another words if Fram can make it cheaper than STP or who ever was making it previously they will switch the contract over to them as soon as they can.Which leads you to ask how good is the quality of the filter media?? Certainly not as good as Donalson or Baldwin? I wonder if NAPA can give us Specs on it?
