My 69 F250 w/ a C6 does not shift into second gear (skips it and shifts from 1st to D). If I place the column shifter into second gear, I am able to take off from a stop, although I'm not positive it's actually starting in second gear, vs first. So, I believe my problem may be bigger than a servo, I'd like to try replacing it before moving on to more involved and more expensive measures.
This leads to the question about the servo. My servo cover has a large standalone D stamped on it, which I believe makes it the D servo. I can't seem to find any D (or any of the other O-ring types) for sale, except R, which is not appropriate for my application. The varieties that have a molded piston seem to be readily available for sale. Can anyone confirm that the D stamp makes it a D servo.....does anyone know where I can find one (NOS or new aftermarket).....and, if I can't find one, what type(s) should I try in lieu of a D type?
And sorry if my wording or description of the problem is off...I don't have much transmission experience other than shifting them. Thank you!
There was a post about 2 or 3 weeks back about installing the "R" servo instead of a shift kit. The auther said the shift was not harsh like some of the shift kits do. Sorry I don't have anything further to help ya. Hang in there, some of the other guys will chime in soon.
Hey thank you...the part #s go along way! I just hope I get lucky and the parts will do me some good.
You aren't getting any complete part numbers, just basic part numbers. The text section of the catalog is required to get the basic numbers apropos prefix and suffix.
#dummy, Now that I know that, I see I could have used the prefix from the servo cover to help determine the piston part #. But truth be told, if you hadn't supplied the additional info I would have purchased a wrong part from a different decade
Totally awesome that you are willing to share all the info from your manuals, and help people out. I've seen many of your other posts and I think it's super cool. Thank you again,
That would be me. I used the Superior company's KO-16 R servo on my 72. But all of the C6s are the same.
I highly recommend the R servo over a shift kit.
It seems to me that the higher the alphabetical code the servo is the better it controls the shift. My wife's truck, a 71 had the L servo and my 72 had the N servo. Neither of which was a bad shift but as with all of the stock Ford transmissions they shifted like wet noodles.
Mushy going into 3rd and taking too long to get out of second.

How hard was it to install ? I have a transgo shift kit pretty cheap have not installed yet is it as simple as unbolting the old putting in the new one ? I always had a crappy 1st to second super soft 2nd 3rd it actually acts like a power glide at times go around a corner at 35 its still in 3rd that gear is long legged .
Gutless unless you manual shift it .
A couple of minutes to carefully assemble the servo. Really it's just a matter of putting the seal on, lubricating the seal and slipping the piston into the housing.
Then 4 1/4-24 bolts, pull out the old servo, position the gasket, push the servo into place, tighten the 4 bolts. Get in and go for a test drive.
You don't lose more than a tablespoon or two of fluid.
This took all of 15 minutes on my wife's 71 and 30+ on my 72 thanks to the routing of the exhaust pipe.
I recommend the servo over the shift kit. I've installed Transgo, B&M, and NAPA kits. Many times. Some made the shifts too hard even on the street level modifications.
I purchased a Transgo kit at the same time as the servo expecting to use both. The shift kit resides, perhaps permanently, in my parts cabinet.
