Big issues with my 2001 PSD

I'm trying to put together a plan of attack on how to diagnose this. I already have a OBDlink MX+ and FORscan but I'm having issues getting it to connect. I'll get that sorted out with support I would guess.

2001 F350 CCSB 4x4 Lariat PSD 168,000 miles

Back story. I have noticed a lack of power, higher than normal EGT and loss of boost for a while, hard starting over the winter and even as it has gotten warmer. The starter seems slow even thought the batteries test good. (I know I need to change that but I don't believe it's related to the power loss). Two weeks ago we were towing our 8000 lbs TT and the EGT was getting out of hand just trying to keep freeway speed. the truck was really struggling. EGT getting up to mid 1300's before I would let off, excepted 60 mph and then we heard the exhaust get louder than normal and lost power even more, was puffing black smoke an running real rough. there was an exit right there and we coasted off. the smoke stopped, the engine smoothed out and power returned. we decided to pull into a lot and see if something was really broken. stopped, nothing looked out of place, oil was good, nothing leaking, all the turbo piping looked to be in place. Idle was smooth. So we continued on figuring to take surface streets as we were almost to the campground. This is where it gets funny. a few miles up the road I had a butthead slam on the brakes a 5 or 6 cars in front of me and and had to do a panic stop... that is when the hard brake line on top of the rear axle let go... yup no brakes. we took a water filled ditch with the trailer. Killed a mail box and street sign but no damage to either the truck or trailer. Had ti flat bedded home and a friend got the trailer home too. Order new stainless lines and put them in last night.

So I couldn't get the OBDlink to work and thought it might be the tuning, I broke out the Superchip Flashpac and pulled the codes and returned it to stock, I was using the Tow/Performance setting. I suspect wiring issues but don't really know.

here are the codes:

P1670 EF Feedback Signal not detected

P0381 Glow Plug Indicator circuit error

P1247 Turbo Boost Pressure Low

P0705 Transmission Range Sensor Circuit Error

P1139 Water in Fuel Indicator Circuit Error

P0640 Manifold Intake Air Heater Control Circuit

This if the first time I have pulled code in years and the truck hasn't been to a dealer is years as well. I have no idea how old any of these codes could be. The boost and EGT numbers come from a triple gauge cluster I installed years ago. I also have a trans temp gauge.

After fixing the brake lines I took it for a spin and It still has almost not boost, Maybe 5-6 psi at heavy throttle. The EGT is still higher that normal and there is a very noticeable exhaust noise.

Just for further reference I am selling this truck in the next few months and I don't have to drive it daily. It gets maybe 5000 mile per year now. I am getting ready to order a new F250...

The noticeable exhaust noise makes me think up-pipes might be leaking to the turbo - any soot where they enter the back of the turbo? Good plan putting the PCM back to stock while troubleshooting. Might be good to clear the codes and see what comes back.

It's beyond hope, drop it and the title off at my house & I'll get you a ride home.

Exhaust leak is where I'd start too, as well as clearing and rechecking codes.

The codes were cleared when I changed the programming so I'm covered there. I'll go over the piping again with a mirror and light... I have a buddy that also suggested I open the air inlet to the turbo and spin it and check for slop and runout.

Could just be a dirty air filter too.

You might check the ebpv valve functionality. When mine was sticking I lost boost, egts went up quick and smoked like mad!.

well I dug into it last night and found a few things... some of them I'm really embarrassed to say, but;

It appears I've had some rodent visitors, there is a nest in the valley around the fuel filter. I found a wire to the Water in fuel sensor broken, I will have to check all the wiring going through there to see what else might have been compromised. I checked turbo operation and it is spinning quietly, and then there is the air filter... It is trashed, the noise and weird sounds most likely were pieces of paper blowing through the system. Hopefully I haven't plugged up the intercooler. There isn't a lot of it missing, but I've never seen the passages of the intercooler to know what might pass through.

Still no luck getting the OBDlink MX+ to work correctly but they suggested a return to factory settings for it and I'll bet that will work. Oddly FORscan will talk to the link just not their app. I need a crash coarse in FORscan to know how to set it up. Maybe that is a separate thread?

That is one ugly filter. Santa is watching you now. Had a repeated rodent problem on my Aerostar, they loved to build a nest in the airbox and nibble the filter. Eventually I cut some 1/4" screen to fit over the intake pipe and hot glued it on there. Kept them out just fine.

Not a Fram fan for air filters, the fit is usually poor. Stick with Motorcraft or Wix. And make sure all the clips are present and working on the airbox, it's notorious for broken clips. Or upgrade to the awesome powah of a fully functioning AIS unit!

Assuming you are on windows, make sure FORScan is looking to connect with the OBDlink. Mine went looking for my phone first and never connected. Duh. I had to manually select the OBDlink. Go to the gear icon then select connection tab and make sure it's looking for your paired OBDlink and not some other random BT device.

The K&N will be here tomorrow, I had one around somewhere but can't seem to find it. I have all the filters and an oil change on the way to do over the weekend.

I'm using IOS with the FORscan. I was able to get it connected last night and it looks like I'll be good. With the FORscan I'm not really sure what I do now. I know it will monitor just about everything but it looks like I have to set it all up and I have no idea how to... I'm going to ask a stupid question, I'm still not up on all the acronyms, what is a PID and which ones if any should I load.

@bertscw I would invite you to spend a few moments looking over the threads hosted in our 7.3L PSD Tech Folder located in the link below.

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...-7-3l-psd.html

Particularly, the Misc Information & Modifications

You will find quite a bit of information on PID's, Torque Pro, Forscan and how to read and decipher those PID's. If you still have questions or concerns, by all means please post them here. If you manage to figure out your issues, we always love a good update.

Thank you! I have done searches and poked around a ton and haven't found anything. This is exactly what I need.

Some of the filter issues were rodents, most is just poor maintenance.

Drop in K&N are known to be pretty poor filtration, you should stick with Motorcraft or Wix for the stock air box. Don't use Fram either.

Quality filters have plenty of pleats for airflow on a stockish truck.

Just do a little searching on K&N and the 7.3s with the drop in.

the poor maintenance is the part I'm embarrassed about... I know better but with how little I drive the truck (I have a '15 Passat TDI that I drive most of the time) it just slipped off the table. I know, just excuses.

The NAPA filter that was in it went in while I was supposed to be cleaning and recharging the K&N that came out but it's been a couple of years with injuries and recovery that took me out of working on trucks. (two rotator cuff surgeries)

I've used K&N filters as long as I've had cars and trucks and they have never let me down. I have years of oil analysis on this truck with K&N installed that showed no ill effects. I will follow your advice and do some research on them but the new one is already on the way so I'm committed at this point.
