Hey guys
99 f250 with 6.8 v10
The truck developed this intermittent exhaust blubber and really gets jerky between 1500 and 2000 rpms but clears out above and below that rpm range. Anyone experience this or have any idea of what it could be?
Early V10's had an issue called "Exhaust Flutter." (Do a search on it.) It was a noise that originated in the Y-pipe, just beyond the exhaust manifold. It had something to do with the diameter and bends in the pipe and the exhaust pulses of the V10. There was some sort of a standing wave resonance that occurred around 1500-2000 rpm. Along with the noise, the truck's power kind of flattened out/fell off and it would occasionally stumble too ....I guess the noise could be described as a "blubber."
It's been ~17 years since I had it fixed on my '01 F350 V10. (I haven't had the truck since 2010.) Ford changed out my y-pipe under warranty. Also, there was some sort of a thermal shield next to the y-pipe that would also resonate/rattle along with the flutter in the pipe and made it sound worse in the cab...
20 years later, I don't know,...maybe your exhaust manifold or the Y-pipe is cracked? Or are your CATs stating to plug up?
