88 EFI 460 advice
I am eliminating the Air pump and all lines etc that go with it because this truck has many hard miles. It had nails plugging most of the lines that went over to the Bank of canisters on the pass side fender, so I am guessing most of it was not functioning anyway.
1. On removal of the engine the fittings for the EGR valve broke. Can I just eliminate it and cap it off like the older trucks? It does have a plug that goes to it.
2. I want to use the EFI again, but will it function properly without much of the emissions equipment? Would it be better to convert this over to a carb? I do have older 460s I could take the heads and intakes off of. Would they work on the newer block?
3. Would it be good to replace the injectors because it has set for many years and they are probably gummed up? The old fuel stinks etc. Would reman ones be ok?
4. I bent the fuel rail slightly taking it off (bull in a china shop). Can it be straightened out and seal properly?
5. Are the fuel pumps in the tanks and should be replaced due to old gas etc? Or can I drain the tanks and refill with fresh fuel and be ok? (Im poor!)
6. Will the stock distributor and ignition work without the EGR and emissions junk?
7. Can the fume canistors be removed, and how would you make sure the tanks are vented properly?
Thanks for any advice you have to these questions. I was a mechanic for a number of years, but have not dealt with the late 80s EFI system.
2) Yes but you may get codes.
3) May not be necessary - get clean fuel in it first.
4) No way to tell from my keyboard, you will just have to try.
5) See #3.
6) See #2.
7) Yes but you would be venting the tank to air.
