1993 Interior Front Door Panel/Switches Interchangeability?
Anyone swapped interior door panels on older E series vans with newer model panels? I'm looking to replace the upper/lower door panes in my 1993 E350 and was wondering if those from a later model would fit and work. I'm mostly interested in the newer (better) switches. I'm sure the pigtails have changed, but I don't mind figuring out which wire goes where and splicing them in assuming that would work. I know some older switches were routed through relays where as some modern switches don't require them.
Theoretically door shells from '92 through 2013 should be direct swaps as far as interior door panels. About 2005 E-Series began using the CAN-bus system of "modules" which did replace older style relays and current passing mechanical switches---probably about 2008 or '09 I'm sure the door switches for power windows and power door locks were fully part of the communication network where those "modules" were used extensively.
I would hazard a guess door panels up to model year 2007 would require the least amount of modification or more involved re-wiring the electrical connections.

HTH
So if I'm looking for the bette rocker switches (front windows, door lock & power mirrors) with the least amount of work, I should be safest trying out anything prior 2005 meaning late 90's through early 2000's. Thanks! I'll start at the top and work my way down by ordering a used 2004 driver's side master control panel and if I can get that wired in to control the doors, windows & mirrors, I should be good to order the remaining bits to match. I see the potential to paying a lot of "stupid tax" on this one
I'm still not sure exactly what year the E-Series received the last face lift/make over--the one with new dash board and front end sheet metal---2008 or 2009 IIRC---someone correct me there please.
Basically anything from 2007 back to 1997 would be what you're seeking I have a 2000 with transplanted 1997 door panels as well as a 2003 with stock PW/PDL/Mirror control switches. If its helpful I could post some photos for your reference.

Lemme know!
I suspect Ford changed a lot from 1993 to the next change in 1997 and my main concern would be attachment points where the panel bolts/clips into areas of the underlying inner door sheet metal. I suspect I would have an issue with the mirror inner protector as well as the inner door trim upper depending on how the 1997+ attaches. I'd hate to have you tear into your door panels, but perhaps you know this offhand ... does the 1997+ panels still come in 2 pieces? The 1993 has an upper and a lower that separate at roughly 3/5th upper and 2/5th lower when viewed complete ... almost 1/2 & 1/2. In the meantime, I've gotten on eBay and ordered a window/mirror master control for the driver's side to see if I can manage to get it working ... if so I plan on investigating the door panels further. Thanks for all your help, I greatly appreciate it!
Color me embarrassed---I'd forgotten I'd created a how to on door panel removal some time ago. Here's what I posted in the Tech Folder: Door Panel Removal
The only real difference in the sheet metal shells from 2002 to 2003 is how the outside mirror mounting area was changed to accommodate the newer 4 bolt mirror bases. There might have been a similar change in the '96 to '97 years as the mirror bases changed then too. I'm working at a slight disadvantage in never having dealt with any door or body before model year 1997.
That link above might be helpful. I don't mind tearing into my own door panels---its almost like changing radio stations these days.
