So my Ex is down with a dead tranny. I scored a 5R110 with 30K miles on it for a decent price. It has a stock torque converter now, but I'd like to get a beefy one for insurance.
If you install the converter and trans yourself be sure that you get it seated all the way.
If you don't have the converter seated correctly it will eat things.

Trying to convince myself to have it done by a shop. I'd have get a good transmission jack to do it myself.
Stock 5R110W torque converter is very adequate for all but the most extreme uses. I wouldn't waste any money on one.
I totally agree with this. Mine has been through one transmission rebuild and has almost 280K on it with LOTS of abuse (dragstrip) and I have NO complaints.
This brings up something I’ve always wondered about. The later model trans have what have been called upgraded components, and when you look at aftermarket performance replacement parts, it seems the early version trans are excluded due to this.
So for those early pickups and Excursions, if you go for salvage, what are the best ones to get and comparable?
In 2005 the geaarset was changed to handle the increased torque from the 2005 6.0L. This changed the gear ratios in first and second gears, though not by much.

Not for Chet.
I wonder how shorter it would have lasted if it was the earlier trans.
