Today after I changed my oil, I start the truck up and the brake pedal vibrates. Immediately I think the power steering pump is screwed up.
If you rev it up it vibrates less, the steering isn’t bad, when you press the pedal the whole system flexes.
It is the factory pump, 321k.
Any recommendations on a new pump? I am leaving for vacation on Sunday so I would need it by Saturday.
Thanks in advance!
If so, a good flush, and I mean a good flush of the hydroboost system may help. I had replaced my steering gear in October time frame and bled the system using Valvoline synthetic ATF. Everything was fine until our ambient air temperature dropped into the teens and single digits for about 5 days straight. I guess the air or whatever in there caused a problem that was not present during warmer conditions.
I pushed about 3 quarts of fluid through the system as a last ditch effort before ordering a new hydroboost and by the 3rd quart the pedal was getting much better. I pushed another 2 quarts through and it was good to go and has been since then which was about 6 months ago.
On a side note, my steering pump has developed a very slow leak and I will be replacing it this winter. I will be going with a Motorcraft reman from Rock Auto.

I didn’t really hear any noise from it, this pumps been through hell, it’s been starved a couple times and incorrectly purged. Doesn’t make much noise though, the only issue is the pedal pulsates/vibrates at a stop. I did buy 4 qts of fluid to try and flush it tomorrow. Worst comes to worst I’ll buy a new pump from the auto parts store and hope for the best.
If you start the truck and look into the reservoir can you see cavitation? If someone turns the wheel can you see cavitation of the fluid? I just bought a Advanced Auto pump, it’s been good for 2 years. KOW! My pump worked intermittent, no cavitation or very limited, and with it the brakes too. I also used Valvoline Synthetic ATF.

Last night i had my friend press on the brakes while i looked at the reservoir. there was no cavitation to be seen, only the power steering lines tensed up when the brakes were pressed. Turning the steering wheel seemed easy even with my larger tires. I decided to buy a NEW pump from napa, i have heard too many bad things about reman pumps and decided to go NAPA as they have a lifetime warranty with a brand new pump.

Keep us in mind with how the install goes and what your thoughts are on the pump. I will be replacing mine in the fall/winter season and am curious to hear your thoughts.
All together again. Started out by removing the serpentine belt, alternator, intake and intercooler pipe. Siphoned out all the atf, removed the lines, and the lines to the power steering cooler. Virtually got all the fluid out. Put everything back together, and put the lines on. Used my finger nails to put on the teflon o ring, just go slow. Put in some Lucas Power Steering Additive, and then added fluid till I couldn’t. Put the truck in no start, cranked it over while I turned the wheel, did that a couple times till I deemed there was enough fluid in the system. Added a bit more and started the truck up and flushed the system till it was cherry red out of the return line. So far no leaks, no whine, brakes are fixed.
