PWR Steering Pumps

1999 Early F250 SD. This post is in regards to the power steering pump.
When I bought the truck back in 2005, the power steering pump whined really loud. I followed the directions here(FTE) about flushing the power steering fluid and replacing it with Mobil 1 synthetic ATF. This fluid change quieted down the pump and I was happy. Fast forward to Sept 2012. The pump has gotten louder with pump whine that you can here it when the engine revs up and down. In September, I decided to replace the power steering pump and install a new unit after 265,000 miles of service. I bought the new pump from AutoZone, installed it and used Mobil 1 once again. I noticed the whine was still there after the install. I was talking with the guys at Autozone and they stated that the factory pump has closer tolerances than the after market units and therefore will have a louder whine. They also stated that I should have used the recommended ATF instead of the synthetic. They recommended changing out the fluid and replace it with the required ATF to quite down the whine. The thought is that the ATF is thicker than the Mobil 1 synthetic.

What do you guys think?
Jeff

I did my power steering pump several years ago with an Autozone unit. I replaced it again a couple months later with a Motorcraft one. No problems since. To be honest, I have done this with a lot of parts. Water pump, alternator, etc...

Buy OEM, save the headache.

Power Steering Pump Update

Hey Guys,

I found a solution to the whine in the power steering pump.

Dura Lube makes a product called "Instant Quiet" about $7.00.
It states that it will quiet engine and transmission noise. Label states it is compatible with all types of engine and mechanical fluids.

Since AFT is used in the power steering system I figured to give it a try.
I pulled out 4oz of the Mobil 1 synthetic and added 4 oz of the Dura Lube.

Started the truck up and the nosie went away. It was that noticeable. The fluid was cold. I drove the truck and warmed up the fluid and allowed it to circulate throughout the system. The noise is gone. I have since drove 100 miles and I can not hear the wine of the power steering pump.

So, if your power steering pump is noisey or whines try this Dura Lube "Instant Quiet"

Report back in 6 months/6,000 miles. If it hasn't blown up then I will add it.

I have had good luck with the Lucas power steering additive. I only had half of what they suggest, for starters. I agree with the comment about Autozone-type PS pumps - A1 Cardone reman stuff is total junk, IMO, and I would do a lot to avoid ever using one of their allegedly remanufactured products again. I wonder who rebuilds Ford's pumps?
