i have a 1998 e 150 4.6 engine conversion van and will be doing a trans fluid flush, not sure which trans is in my van , it does have 14 bolts holding the pan on, VIN # 1FDRE1467WHB86137. My dealer prep statement says it is a elect. auto o/d trans? But most other ID stickers are missing. thought it was a 4r70 like my 1995 thunderbird. Are the trans oil filter the same between the different transmissions. anyone know the correct /best type of filter to use?
Has anyone done the j mod to their E150 transmission?
Ok thanks Mark. It's what I thought it is, so now I'll pick up a filter. I'll be following your flush process. I,m doing the trans flush because it's got a hard shift at about 35 to 40 MPH, I hope that will help it. Any words on the J mod.
I used to work with Jerry, who created the J mod. He knows the 4R70W as well as anyone. But I don't, and I don't know what the J mod does. But if Jerry created it, it's probably worth doing.

I have no direct knowledge of the J-Mod but I do see it mentioned very, very often in any forum where Ford transmissions are discussed----it does seem to be overwhelmingly positively received by those who've either DIY or had it done by a professional shop. If I were in a place it would be possible to perform I'd do it out of pure curiosity.
Thx for all the input from folks! Mark,Sam,JWA i did the flush and was immediately impressed with the driving results. Smooth and improved shifting , no more shuddering at 40 mph on the acceleration to 60 mph. wish I had done it sooner (thought it was a ignition issue). almost like getting a horsepower increase.
Info . I had my mechanic do a JMod to my 1995 ford thunderbird , 10 years ago , before the j mod , the 4r70 trans shuddered. quite a bit in spite of 2 flushes,. After the Jmod , shudder was gone and it had very fast upshift . kind of like a kick in the pants with a manual trans. I still have the the car going on 225k with original trans. It was worth it for 400 dollars. There is a u tube video on the process .

Mark K's article really simplifies this flush and it is indeed possible for just one person to do this. Apart from not walking back and forth to the ignition switch I'm not sure how a second person could make it easier?
Along with the YouTube stuff there's a lot of info available here as well: TCCoA J-Mod 4R70W. Thanks for the impressions of the J-Mod to your own 4R70W--good to know it really is a good idea.
I've only done it once with a second person. That person worked the key and moved the shift handle as needed while I watched the flow. All the other times I've done this I did it by myself.
