I have an 03 250 power stroke , coming home the other day I ended up going down a street that was a dead end , couldn’t turn around so I had to back up a steep hill. About 3 blocks of driving I noticed my trans temp gauge was all the way hot , and my overdrive was flashing on . I had to get out of the street so I went around the block so I could get towed but my trans temp went back to normal , then it dropped all the way cold , and then shot right back up again . I let it sit for a day , tried to again . I could drive it till the trans temp reaches normal warm temps , and as soon as it warms up it skyrockets back up . Any ideas ? It hard shifted a little when the trans temp went all the way up
Mark K has explained it several times, but the quickest way to AVOID the problem is to put the transfer case into low range when backing up a hill while pushing a load with a hot transmission.

So what are the possibilities here so I can fix it
The trans temp sensor is bad. It's located in the pan. It's a common failure mode in this transmission.
Yes you were right I changed that , but now I have atf coming out all over the place so I’m changing the gasket tomorrow to see if I can correct the issue , never had a leak before so either I didn’t tighten it enough or somehow the gasket wasn’t aligned properly
