Transmission swap

What issues will I run into by swapping in a 1988 F150 AOD transmission into a 1983 F150? Both are 5.0 engines.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Here's some info. Looks like as long as you get the throttle cable to the transmisison hooked-up and adjusted correctly, it would work ok. It may be longer or shorter than the trans you have now, so you might need to modify the driveshaft.

The 1988 AOD still had a cable to control the transmission. The 1988 5.0 also was fuel injection. The 1983 5.0 had a carb. You

will have to hook up the cable to the carb properly to get the AOD to live and operate like it is suppose to.

The door sticker on the 83 is missing part of it, but the transmission appears to be the AOD based on a rectangular pan and 14 bolts. I am concerned about the wiring to tge sensor on the driver's side of the transmission. And thanks for the info on hooking up the 'kick down" cable.

Thanks, both the 83 and 88 are single cab long bed trucks. Tge driveshaft on the 88 is 1 piece aluminum and approximately 69 1/2" long, while the driveshaft on the 83 has a center bearing and is 75" long. I can work out the driveshaft and cable lengths, but am concerned with the wiring to the sensor/actuator on the driver's side of the transmission.

Thanks

Another option may be to use the carburetor TV linkage from the 83 on the 88 trans.

I did a google search on "Ford TGE sensor" and nothing came up. TGE is not ringing any bells.

And that is not a "kickdown" cable. Do a little more reading. That cable on the AOD controls the pressure in the trans which controls shifting. If this cable is not set up properly, the trans will burn up in short order. It's very important to get the cable correct. Here's another link on it.

The only thing that plugs in is the neutral safety/backup light switch on the drivers side. It is the same on all AOD transmissions.

Friend of mine got the 302 and aod from my parts truck to put his '80 back on the road. His shade tree mechanic told him his truck didn't have enough computer to run it, so he got a small block c6 for it. Your post made it sound like he was blowing smoke.... I never got a look at the transmission before they got it. So no idea what it looks like or what it has for controls.

AOD doesn't need a computer. AODE and 4R70W which are later versions of the AOD do need a computer.

The plot thickens. All I ever got decoding the VIN and door tag was aod. Guess I'll have to look up year and application to see what went or could have gone behind a 302 in '85

According to this article, the AODE came out in 1992. Around 1993 the 4R70W came out. So 1985 would be the regular AOD with no computer.
