Ford ESP
it has pros and cons
pros:
it could help with a deep pocket repair bill during the normal post warranty period
its supposed to be transferable (for a small fee) so it might help with future resale
I don't drive a lot of miles and doubt I will hit 125K in 8 years so the 8/125 has some appeal
cons
its unlikely that ford will honor the extended , especially for things they can transfer responsibility for (your 10K fuel system bill was not a material defect...its because you did something like buy fuel and too bad for you that our water separator design doesn't work.
you cant do mods that make sense because it would break the warranty. a CP4 bypass mod would probably prevent a fuel system failure so you wouldn't need the ESP but if you do a CP4 mod, you just thru the ESP out the windows. CP4 mod is 300 bucks, max ESP more than 3000. same for oil bypass mod, coolant mod, etc.
Im probally going to trade in my truck in a year or 2 and I doubt that ford will honor the resale value advantage that they pitch when they sell you the ESP.
conclusion:
its not an easy "I did it and feel good about it" situation. dammed if you do and dammed if you don't.
I mainly did it because the dealer that took my trade gave me 10,500 more than anyone else so I figured I bought the ESP with free money.
my recommendation would be not to buy and ESP and just throw the truck over the fence after the warranty expires and trade it back into ford. The 3500 max ESP money would make a good loan down payment.
The dealer has had quoted me $2050 for ESP but I don’t know exactly which plan. I have a meeting with them next week. Of course I live in FL but bought the truck up north. I’m not sure they are aware of FL restrictions. But maybe that’s to my advantage? Is there a guide that details all options on ESP as well as pricing? If I’m going to buy it, I want to be able to evaluate coverage and options and pricing for the duration.
