Just got done rebuilding the zf5 for my 460 f350 4x4. The last step was to measure shim thickness and preload on the main and counter shafts. I got that all taken care of and by the instructions, reassembled the case. Before I called it quits, I stood it up on end and rowed through all the gears using my other hand to spin the input shaft to make sure I have engagement on all gears, no problem. The next morning I spent a couple minutes installing the detent plugs, springs, and caps. Later that night after work I was admiring my accomplishment when I shifted it into a gear (not sure which one) and the cap on the furthest passenger side shot out of the bore as well as the spring. The detent plug stayed in.
2 questions, first, I’m assuming the bore got loosened up and I’ll just have to figure out a way to keep the cap retained. Is this a common problem?? Secondly, does this have anything to do with why I cant seem to get it into first gear or reverse now?
Just trying to to see if there’s any relation to the problem since that’s the only difference in when it worked until now it doesn’t. Thanks everyone!
ever figure it out??? im having similar problem. the spring and cap would shoot out because its under pressure upwards. the detent has pressure on it downwards.... cap, spring, detent pin
