Hey guys. So I just changed the oil in the 6.2 last weekend and went to double check it today and I easily have 1/2 quart too much in there. My 6.2 is a 2016 and the oil level is just below where it says FoMoCo on the dipstick beyond the hash marks and the upper hole.
Should I pull the filter and empty it and reinstall to lower the level or do you think I’m ok until the next oil change?
I’m not positive what went in. I finished up 2 5qt jugs that were partially full and then topped it off by opening a new 5qt jug I just bought so very well could be my own oversight.
I think sometime over the next week I’ll just put a new filter on it and let the motor fill it from the sump. That should get me back down to the top hash mark.
1/2qt is nothing! Just run it. The oil pump is going to circulate the same amount of oil whether there is 4qts or 8qts in the pan.
There is a point where overfilling is bad, but in these trucks, it would be 2+ quarts over or more. The issue with extreme overfilling, is that the crankshaft splashes around the oil in the pan and creates air bubbles (foams the oil), which then can cause air pockets in the pump and oil passages in the engine that can starve the bearings of oil.
Think about it...1/2qt of oil spread over the entire area of the oil pan is nothing! Also, when you start the engine and the oil pump starts flowing, the oil level in the pan drops far away from the crankshaft as the oil is pumped through the engine and filter.
My Cummins calls for 12qts for an oil change. I always put 12 in the pan and 1 in the oil filter for a total of 13qts.
My motorcycle (998cc) calls for 3.25qts, and I run 3.75qts in it.
Never a problem
If they wanted you to run more than 7 quarts of oil they would have said 7.25 or 7.5. There’s a reason for what they said. Personally in my truck I would drain it down to the correct amount.
Drain it until it’s good on the dipstick. No need to have extra oil in the crankcase. If ford wanted more than 7 quarts they would have given the 6.2 a bigger oil pan.
i did the same thing on my 96 460 ... except I over filled it by one qt, Manual says 5, i put in 6. thoughts ?
I'd run it if it were me. What does it show on the dipstick? If my memory is correct, I think it was 5 quarts for an oil change w/o a new filter, and 6 quarts with a new filter.
After looking...I am correct: There is a footnote (3) next to the capacities in the owners manual. That footnote states "Add 1 quart for filter replacement" This brings the total to 6 quarts with a filter change.
