my first diesel oil change!! I bought a 1994 F-350,7.3 IDI. I just put the first oil change on it, but now I'm confused. I bought 2 gallons of 15w40 when I got the filter, because I thought I had another gallon here, but it was already used... so I put in the 2 gallons I had, and checked the stick. It was just at the bottom of the hash-marks. I started up the truck for a minute to move the oil. Then I rechecked the stick, and rechecked 3 times. Now it shows WAY up the sides, maybe an inch over the top of the hash-marks- not solid across the stick, just up the sides of the stick, but still- I checked it, wiped it off, rechecked it and still the same.
so am I over? on 8 qts? is there some magic to an oil change on a diesel- I did what I always did with my gas vehicles- oil pan bolt out, filter out, wait till just hanging drips, put back the bolt, add new filter, put in oil.
what am I missing?
Diesels are harder to check the oil in. Since there is so much more oil than in a gas engine, the reading is far more susceptible to heat expansion and top-end draining.
The capacity should be 10.5 quarts plus one for the filter.
The correct way to check the oil is to run it long enough for the oil to reach operating temp, which I would say is about 10 minutes. Then you need to shut it off and let it sit for about another 15 minutes so that all of the oil has a chance to drain into the pan. Then check the oil, this is the true level.
The cross-hatched area on the dipstick is 2 quarts, not 1.
i think what you are seeing is the oil in the dipstick tube if it is just on the side of the stick and not fully across, you can either 1) let it sit for a short while with the stick out and then check once the oil has drained out the tube or 2) look for where the oil is fully over the stick which it it submerged in the oil in the pan. That is my opinion I'm sure other will chime in
Oil capacity with a stock filter is 10 qts. If you choose to use the larger, powerstroke filter(FL1995), it will take 11 qts. I use the FL1995 filter, 2
5 qt jugs of Motorcraft 15w40 and a qt of Lucas Oil Stabalizer per oil change mainly because it's all affordable and all available at one place, Wallyworldmart.
To check bring engine up to operating tempature (go for a ride) then shut it down for 3-5 minutes and check. As long as it's in the hash mark don't add. At the bottom hash it's 2 qts to refill.

I can only get 10.5 qts. in mine with the FL1995. Warm, that puts it right on the full line.
i put 12 qts in, standard filter. brings it a quart over for me. got a amsoil bypass filter on its way. that will bring me 12 qts right at the fill line
It does show, barely - I just found that out yesterday, guess that's what I get for driving her like just once a week, and not checking the oil leak progress more often.
hmmm I may need to drain some out then...expecially if its only 10-12q
against my better judgement I had an oil change done by my mechanic. I think he put in way way too much oil. No running problems but its reading REALLY high on the dipstick. Strange thing is it doesnt smell like coolant or diesel hmmm
Skimmed the last few posts... I dont think ive ever sene 15-40 in a 5qt jug.. havent looked either. Your IDI should be right at 11qts with filter, or closer to 12 with the PSD filter.
Something i didnt see mentioned, the dipstick uses a 2qt add mark, not the typical 1 qt as with gassers.
