Probably one of the odder questions to be asked here but I recently purchased a Ford service manual for my truck on eBay that's the real deal from a closed dealer service department. I've been familiarizing myself with it but noticed things like fluid drain/replace procedures aren't mentioned. Case in point: couldn't find anything discussing the service of the rear differential's fluid.
Can anyone else confirm this? I've got everything on how to tear the rear axle apart piece by piece but nothing on a basic fluid change. Am I missing something or was it just inferred a tech knew how to do something so basic? Just more curious than anything else since the front differential has a section in the manual labeled "drain and fill general procedure" but nothing for the rear.
Thanks for anyone who takes the time to put up with my OCD and looks in their own service manual.
Just making sure I'm not missing a section or not navigating the CD correctly.
What is it you are needing to know about the rear differential?
I have the CD covering 07-08 model years as my truck is a 2007. Wasn't looking for anything in particular but it would've been nice to see Ford's method for changing the fluid outlined in the manual. I'm trying to determine if it is even discussed in the service manual, but I'm beginning to think it's so basic a task, it was never discussed--unless of course I'm missing a section covering basic routine maintenance procedures.
If I'm not mistaken, things such as fuel filter replacement and oil change procedures are also not discussed in the manual. I'm moreso just trying to determine if in fact those basic procedures aren't discussed.
You will find the rear axle service procedure more or less discussed in sections like rear axle differential replacement. This is from the 2014 10.50" Sterling rear axle section.
I own quite a few factory service manuals from different manufacturers (Honda, Subaru, Ford & more) and not a single one has a separate section for standard maintenance tasks. For example, engine oil filter replacement is deep in the engine section, with the oiling system info. As the other poster stated, rear diff fluid is always in the drivetrain section. My oldest manual is for 1999 Honda Accord, they are all basically the same.
Thanks for confirming that. I've grown accustomed to using the Chilton service manual for my truck. After purchasing the workshop manual, I've been familiarizing myself with navigating it and how it is organized. So from what I can conclude, basic service procedures aren't necessarily outlined in a separate section, but are usually discussed in larger service procedures e.g., servicing the differential fluid is covered in the driveline subsection covering rear axle removal and replacement?
