I don't have an answer, but am curious what is wrong with your existing one?
My '93 is in fantastic shape (steering-wise) but the shift aspects suck! I'm assuming it's in the column at this point, rather than anything with the transmission. It's got the "won't go fully into Park and will shift itself back into Reverse blues" right now and the shift positions are vague at best.
This what you have going on? Or some other issue?
Yes, you can use an automatic one, just remove the shifter stuff, it kinda just sits on top of the column on that style. I have done this. Then use your existing plastic shroud so there is not a big hole where the shifter goes.
Just as jas88 said, the auto column will be fine. I just had mine out to replace ign switch actuator. Auto shift lever is attached with 4 bolts. There is an electric shift interlock that can be removed, 2 or 3 more bolts there, and 1 pin you can knock out to remove the shift lock lever.
Someone mentioned on another post that a crown vic column will work. I'm not sure if that is true but it is certainly worth looking into. Lots of CV's in the scrap yard and many are used a lot more gently than trucks!
