What is a tailgate lock, and what key would it use....was it a Ford thing or aftermarket? I dropped my truck off to have the bed lined and they are saying they can't do the job because they can't get the tailgate off. I have no idea....all I have is the Ford key that came with the truck when I bought it used.
Yeah it was aftermarkt...total junk. McGuard = McCrap! And what a waste of a half day. LineX tech would not attempt to drill or cut it off, nor let me borrow the tools to do...which I can understand. Said it had to go to Ford to get a new key. Ford tech looked at me like I was stupid and said to drill or cut it off, that they don't install or sell those. After returning home, I had it cut off in minutes with a small stone on my Dremel. The damn thing is just a worm gear covered in plastic (which was easily pried away with pliers) and a coke machine style key on the screw.
Now that that is out of the way, I have to return to LineX and start all over again next Friday. Sighhhhhhhhhh. Moral of the story is...don't waste your time or $$ on those McCrap locks.
I put a stainless steel hose clamp on mine to do the same thing. Anything to slow the bad guys down and motivate them to look elsewhere for the easy target.

Yes. I was just about to mention this. Cheap and effective.

I also went this route. Just something that might make them say "I'll find another truck"

I did the same thing with my 1996 back in the day. I sure like having the key lock on the new one though. But like mentioned, no guarantee though.
