Factory tailgate missing key

I recently purchased an 02 F250. I assumed that the ignition key would work on the tailgate lock but I was wrong. What should I do so I can lock my tailgate? How do I get a key for it? Or do I need to have a new lock cylinder installed?

Yes, it should be the same key as your ignition.

Does your ignition key fit your door locks?

You might be able to go to ford with the vin number and proof of ownership and have a new lock cylinder keyed alike, or have them key it to your current key and update the database if it isn't the original key. The cylinder itself is pretty easy to change. You may be able to have a locksmith rekey it to work with your key as well. You have options.

When I got my new bed, I was being really **** when I removed the tumblers from the old lock and put them in the new lock so everything would be as new as possible!

Before you go through all that, take the hadle apart and try cleaning out the lock. It might just be dirty enough inside that it can't turn.

spray some wd-40 in the lock everyday for a week, if its got crude in there and has not been used it will bind just keep workin it and it will probably free up.

I like to use the straw to stick it in and give it a good washing
