After two unsuccessful attempts to break into my tailgate, I'm now left unable to open it myself. The first idiot tried to steal the truck, then I guess decided to break into it with a screw driver, making it impossible to insert or turn a key.
This morning I go to work on it, and the lock cylinder is gone completely. I have a bedcover that I'd rather not destroy, so I'm hoping I can access through the now empty cylinder hole.
I've searched youtube and the forums, but I haven't come up with much.
all the key lock does is flip a lever inside on the lock assembly. See the black triangular shaped lever? That is what the key moves up or down to lock or unlock.
I believe the lever is on the right side/passenger side as view with the tailgate closed.
Have you tried with someones else help at the same time to push in the locks on each side of the tailgate?
No, I haven't tried to push the locks open, but that may be an option. Unfortunately time and necessity caused my to ruin the bed cover to access. I was a bit surprised that the dealer wasn't any help in getting it open.
Aw well...just makes me hate thieves that much more.
You can buy a new key and lock cylinder on eBay for the tailgate if you would like or go to your local locksmith and they can put in a cylinder that will match your key.
