I purchased the truck in my sig a few months ago, it is a 2003 with a 2008 bed and tailgate (previous owner's insurance installed it after a fender bender). This weekend i needed to leave some heavy stuff in the bed overnight, so i decided i should lock the tailgate (never locked it before) just to make it harder to steal the stuff.

Unfortunately it appears that the dingbat PO didn't have the tailgate lock keyed the same as the rest of the locks. (one of several corners he cut that are now giving me grief).

Do i need to go to ford to have it re-keyed? Can i just order a new tumbler from ford with my VIN#? Has anyone done this before? Is it expensive?

I would like to keep my tailgate locked so it is not stolen...

 

This may be a dumb question,how did you lock it w/o a key?
(not familiar w/ the 08 tailgates)

I have had door locks re-keyed at the dealer by providing vin#,I would think the tailgate would be the same.IIRC it was about $75.00.
(new cyl.and keyed).

 

maybe see if a locksmith can do the job. Most locks can be reset to the key provided.

 

OH, i never did lock it... that is just how i found out i couldn't lock it...

I ended up backing the truck right up to a tree so it couldn't be opened (Easily).

After buying my truck, I discovered that the dealer had switched tailgates and put a non step gate on it without switching tumblers. By this time, I had moved 500+ miles away from the dealer and they refused to do anything about it. According to my local dealer, it needed a new tumbler to be able to use the ignition/door keys. They reported this to Ford Canada, who chanded the tumbler for free, and I am told the dealer where I bought the truck got charged for the cost.

 

It is simple to remove, and a locksmith can match it to your existing key. I did this to my 2001.
