I can’t seem to find any post with my same problem. I started having a weird sputtering, at highway speed, in top gear, when I would increase the throttle to the point where it should downshift. Instead of downshifting it would start sputtering and dump large amounts of black smoke. If I pushed the throttle all the way down it would downshift and run fine. This got worse and worse and then I got a egr code. I thought great, I finally found out what was going on and cleaned the egr and then ordered a new one since I didn’t see anything wrong with the old one. It wasn’t clogged or gummy, Just sooty. By this point the problem had got worse. Trying to get it to downshift was very hard and every time I did it looked like I was dumping a gallon of diesel through the engine with the black smoke trail I was leaving. I end up unplugging the egr valve and the truck runs perfect except the idiot light on, which is just the egr codes.
I get the new egr installed and now the problem is different. It doesn’t do the sputtering but the exhaust gas temp runs up to 1400 with a highway downshift and my oil/coolant temp is running up to 20deg different and still a lot of black smoke. All the temps are on the high side. I live in the hills and I can’t drive it normal anywhere and that’s with running no load at all. I didn’t even try hooking the trailer up to it.
I unplug the egr and poof, the truck runs great and tows a 22' car hauler fine!
Does anyone have a clue what is going on???
I have a insight edge programmer with the tow program running. A 5” no cat exhaust. Partially clogged oil cooler with a normal 8 deg differential between oil temp and coolant temp.
The Edge insight reads codes. It's always worked fine before. The only codes I get is when I have the egr unplugged. When I have the egr plugged in I get no codes.
Didn't know that. I have a OBDII ELM327 adaptor and TOAD on a laptop. I'l have to download ForScan and try that. It's been a couple years since I looked for OBDII software. TOAD has always worked pretty good on my other vehicles, do you know if it reads all of them?
I had one code that first time before I replaced it. I don't remember what it was. Now I just have the new egr valve installed and unplugged. I'll get the software and check for any other codes in the next couple of days and check back in.
OK, I got P0403-E0, P0405-E0 and P0403-C with the Forscan also got a weird U1900-30 from the ABS module.
I Got P0403 and P0405 from TOAD SCAN
And I got the same from the Edge Insight.
Pretty sure the ABS U1900 is non related.
Had the P0403/P0405 when I bought the truck. The PO had gutted the EGR valve and stuck it back in and through he had done an EGR delete. I subsequently had to do the job properly and get rid of the codes. I had a code that indicated the right ABS speed sensor was acting up and the CAN bus code. Turned out the ABS module was actually in need of replacement. Got a used one cheap and had it reprogrammed and the errors didn't come back. Took quite a bit of trouble shooting as my first indication was to change the ABS speed sensor but that wasn't the problem at all. The old ABS module had a bit of fried electronics inside; probably some water I am guess got in and damaged the thing. Others have found the ABS errors bad connections more frequently.
