I think so, check the casting number on the 84 heads. The 78s will be D3VE, the 84's may be the same.

thanks Jimmy, i see that they are the same castings...Do you know where I would look for a set of pre 71 heads. I understand they have less detionation problems by design all other thing being equal. Thanks Jim

The earlier heads will actually raise compression and be more prone to detonation. They will raise a 8.0to1 motor to 9.5to1 compression. Plus they use different rocker arm set ups and different push rods.
Most people go for the D0VE heads for the added compression.
I have had good luck with the D3VE heads on my 77 460.
The D0VE's are getting hard to find and are getting costly as well.

I will be doing a spare motor over. I want to run 89 octane at most and get the best hp without spending more then a few hundred or so on heads. I will not be investing in aluminum at this point. towing, low end offroad applacation. If I use older heads with around newer stock pistons compression or about 9:1, will I get detonation. I understand the chambers in newer heads are prone to detonation from chamber design. if compression is correct with old heads and alll things being equal, Can I run a little higher compression because older head design is more helpfull? If so is it worth worring about or just find cheaper D3's and build them. thanks all Jim

I would use a good set of D3VE heads like you have and have them reworked. A good machine shop can smooth out the sharp edges in the combustion chambers to eliminate hot spots. Use a good flat top piston and keep the compression around 9.0 to 1 or so and you should be fine.
You can probably have your heads done as cheap as buying the older small cc heads, then they will need reworked (more than likely), then you have to get the different rocker arm set-up and different pushrods.

The D3 heads have the same chamber design as the DoVE and C8-C9 heads. They are just deeper giving more cc. I also think flat top pistons and the D3's would be a better and less exspensive way to go. I have run dished pistons and small chambered heads and flat tops and D3's and that combo ran better.

The only thing C8,C9, or D0VE are better for is running 10:1+ CR. I'm at 10.5:1 in my 429, I'm able to run pump gas at 11 degrees idle and 37 total advance. I had to recurve to get rid of some midrange pinging. I did a lot of head work to get to that point, but it was worth it.

I agree, going with the D3's, flat tops, and a little head work is a very good choice. The proper cam for what you want out of the motor and proper head work is the most important things on these motors.

Yep, flat top pistons give the best flame travel so using dished pistons and small chambered heads isn't worth the extra money.
Stick with the D3Ve heads and get some good flat top pistons. The heads should be 97cc so get a piston that will give you around 9 or 9.5 to compression with the 97cc heads.

What octane rating are you refering to as "pump gas"?

Just curious.

Thanks,
