It's a limited skip and when I changed lubes a couple of years ago the plug was clean but the grease really needed to be changed.

How stiff is it when it moves through that 1/8th of a turn? Consistently loose, or partly loose, and then stiff?

Consistently loose, you can tell it's just the pinion contacting the ring gear.

Between the slop in the pinion-to-ring gear clearance, and the slop from the axle splines to the diff side gears, that does sound like a lot. Time to take the cover off. You knew it was time to change that gear lube anyway
