Well, .003 to .009 is quite a bit of difference. Does it vary that much when you are checking in 3 or 4 spots? A very knowledgeable friend said, "You need some room for gear lube in there." But, it is the front...limited use and probably not a bunch of long term torque on it.

I checked it in about 10 or 12 spots around the ring

Wait, the backlash changes that much? Is the diff carrier new or used?

Whenever I did a ring and pinion, the backlash was pretty much the same everywhere around the ring gear.

When there's a spec for backlash, like .006 to .010, it means it could be .006, it could be .010 - not that it can vary between .006 and .010

Yes it varies around the ring from .003 to .009. The gears are new (Motive 4:10 Gears) the bearings are all new (Timken) and the carrier is new (Eaton Detroit Truetrac)

Most of the readings are around .007 but there is one tight spot that goes down to .003.

Should I try to remount the ring on the carrier? Maybe I got some trash under the gear when I was mounting it???

Did you hone that back of the ring gear prior to installing it. Set up your indicator so that you check the ring gear run out while spinning the carrier.

The ring gear bolts are one time use.

I did hone the back of the ring gear prior to installation but maybe not enough. I will try to set up the dial indicator on the ring gear tonight and check the runout.

Thank you for the suggestion

Did you clean off all the pattern paste/hi-spot blue before you checked the backlash?

I'm at a loss as to why the backlash would vary that much.

I cleaned the ring gear before I took my readings. It looks like a variation in the gear to me but I am no expert

I think an inquiry to Motive, or the reseller is in order at this point.

I don't want to high jack this thread but I have a quick question, I changed my rear U joint on my F150 today and there is 1/8 rotation when turning the pinion. It has 130K on it and just wondering if I may have a start of future problems or just normal wear.

Denny, is it a limited-slip or open diff? If open, might be somewhat normal. The spider gears can really add some rotational "slop" at the pinion. On the other hand, check the magnetic fill plug for metal
