Looking to purchase a 6.4l powerstroke
Good morning all,
I'm looking at purchasing a 6.4l powerstroke...am I crazy? These trucks really appeal to me. I've had experience with many diesels over my short 30 years from a 6.9l IDI to a 6.0l powerstroke to my current 5.9l common rail. How much work is needed to do typical maintenance on these engines? I've searched a little bit and know that the engine can be pulled with the turbos on and cab on. My old 6.0l was no issue working on it with the cab on. My old Dodge is starting to get old on me. I still owe on it for the next 4 years with 320k on the clock. I know thats not too many miles on the cummins but its more of the 47re that I worry about. The 6.4l is much peppier, has a better transmission, will pull what I need to and rides much but with more luxury then my current truck. Basically, if the 6.4l has emissions in tact should I run or just plan on deleting asap? Talk me out of it with your experience, not hearsay internet BS.
THANKS!

Jason,
No your not crazy. They have all the appeal and luxury any Diesel guy would wish for.
Following the heavy maintenance schedule as outlined in the manual with quality products is key. Draining the water sep monthly is a must. If you can spin wrenches, do diagnostics and don't drive it like a stolen vehicle, I think you would do well in this platform.
I moved up to a 08 F350 CC from an E99 Super that I've had forever and can't believe the difference in all performance and creature aspects. Extremely capable and I haul heavy.
They do have a small list of problematic complaints however, those are mostly generated by inadequate care in most but not all cases. There are many 6.4's on the road with high miles and no problem history. Luck of the draw as they say. I'm happy.
As far as the delete question goes. Absolutely a must. Rid the emissions and that takes the biggest complaints right off the table. Generally speaking most failing 6.4's are related to DPF and EGR systems. Radiators and updated hoses are a must as well as just simple scheduled maintenance. If you glean this forum you'll pick up on the best hacks and advice to minimize catastrophic conditions.
I know you've done homework. This forum is by far one of the quietest I have seen yet and I look at all makes and years. Considering they were only produced for 3 seasons lends into more expensive repair parts, but face it, nothing lasts forever and while I'm not a gambler, I am an optimist and have due diligence in that regard toward maintenance.
Your question is more open to spawning reactions from disgruntled owners than those who don't regularly visit this site due to the fact they don't need to because they aren't experiencing a need for advice if that makes sense.
Strap in.
