Brake problems

I have a 52 Mercury M3 with a 8.8 rear end and IFS. I’m using a dual master cylinder mounted to the fire wall. I have around 250 miles on the truck and today I could smell my brakes getting hot just running around town at 40mph. My question is has anyone had problem with residual valves sticking and do I need them? They are 2lb.
thanks in advance

Pressure in the fluid line is only one cause of brakes dragging. Old caliper rubber will get hard and restrict the pads from returning when the brake pressure is relieved. That said, a residual valve is only needed if the master cylinder is BELOW the brake caliper...if your M/C is on the firewall you should not need a residual.

Thank, all the pads are new, it’s not a hard drag just enough to heat up the brake and my rims were pretty hot.
thanks again

Don, not usually a pad problem...caliper guide problem. Caliper moves when brakes applied but never fully retract when brakes released. I just went through this exact scenario on a truck I recently bought from a guy who had it parked for years...rubber around guide pins was hard. Not saying that's your problem but it's definitely worth a look.

I'll pull the pins tomorrow and put a little grease on them. I had this same problem on my 32 and the grease worked. I'm going to remove the residual valve also if it isn't needed, just something else to give me a problem.
Thanks for the help

Make sure the master cylinder push rod is not too long. There should be about an 1/8 inch gap between the rod and the M/C. If it is too long, fluid will not return to the M/C after braking and will build up pressure.

I took the residual valve out this morning and everything went well on morning drive. I’m still going to lubricant the pin’s.
thanks
