A couple days ago after starting my truck and putting it into reverse I had a big crunchy growl come from the back of the engine/front of the transmission area. Today while driving I noticed a sound that sounds kinda like the fan kicking on right at the time the truck shifts or if I get on it and get above about 2500 rpm. To be sure it wasn't the fan I watched fan speed on torque pro and it never went above 1000 rpm. I'm kinda thinking the torque converter might be crapping out but looking for some insight. Below are the codes I pulled today. Don't remember the last time I pulled and cleared codes. Also I am having problems with the turbo taking forever to spool right now. Haven't had time to pull it and clean it yet.
A bad torque converter may drag engine speed down at idle with vehicle stoped
If you can see a load of may be an indicator to since diesel is so torquey and in early stage of fail maybe hard to tell
It may put shrapnel into thefluid
Out May Have vibration when stopped
That's whatmy last bad torque converter did it was NOT ON a 6.0l truck
I believe they may be typical sign of fail for said part
As of right now I'm not experiencing any driveability issues. Doesn't seem to idle lower in gear or take a bunch of power to get going. (Although the boost takes forever). The only thing I've noticed is the noises. I know on the 7.3 forum they describe their torque converters as sound like gravel in a can when they are failing. I would more describe mine as a crunchy gravelly sound. During the shifts or high rpm it almost sounds like a straight piped gasser, just not near as loud...
I'm hoping you are right that failure is rare and not the case here....
Maybe it's your turbo and not your TC?? The sound would be in the same area and you do have a turbo code (P0299). The rest are EGR related codes.
You may be on to something here. I moved the truck today and while still cold (100-120) ran it up to 3000 rpm in neutral and could here the noise start to come on. Makes me wonder if I have an up pipe or collector area leak. I know improvements we're made over the 7.3 but it looks like this is still a somewhat common occurrence?

I'll have to go with Tim. The noise location and P0299, turbo under/over boost, is one that can't be ignored and I doubt if it's a coincidence since it's taking an abnormal time for the turbo to spool.
Well, time permitting the turbo comes out this week. I finally finished planting everything that is not flooded out last night. If I can get the fencing done in the next couple days I will be starting on the truck finally. Unless it dries up, then we'll be haying.....
Well, no luck this week. Ended up with about 60 hours at work. Nice days so fenced till dark when I got home. Now gone for the weekend. Maybe next week. Happy father's day to all the dads out there!
Well, I found out the reason the noise level increased so much. My exhaust broke off right in front of the catalytic converter. Someone at some point had cut halfway through the pipe on both sides of the cat before I owned it. I guess it finally gave up right before I started the thread. I played with it a little tonight and found that its loose enough to contact the cab and/or frame where it trantsitions from down pipe to the horizontal pipe. Looks like I will be ordering a new exhaust.
Also, I will be starting a new thread to continue talking about my turbo issues.
