I have a 99 F250 7.3 automatic with 200k miles. I was picking up a friend from the diesel shop, and one of the mechanics told me it sounds like the torque converter is about to go out. He said it was a tinging sound that he was hearing, but I didn't hear anything unusual. I know that the torque converter is the weak point in this models drive train, but I don't want to change if it is fine. If there any way to test the torque converter, so I don't have to rely on this guys hunch. Thanks.

It sounds like the flex-plate is cracked...Folks have gone long, long periods of time with this problem...if you indeed have the problem. If the torque converter locks up as it should, then I'd drive it.
It's always worked fine. I pull a 27' dual tandem gooseneck without any trouble. Someone told me that if the torque converter goes, it will burn up the transmission at the same time, any truth?
Not necessarily. Depends on how hard you're working it at that moment, and what debris gets sent through the tranny. Some guys have been able to just replace the torque converter and update the valve body and the mechanical diode while they're in there and go another 200K mi. trouble free. A failed intermediate one-way clutch from the mech diode issue can send a ton of debris throughout the transmission and ruin your day.
If you have been servicing it like you should, and keep the temps down you might get lucky.
I just pulled my head out of my a$$ and re read your post. You shouldn't have the one way clutch issue as it was on '01's. Sorry about that.
I wouldn't sweat it. If and when the TC goes, you'll be spending a dollar or two anyways, so I would just keep on doing what your doing and let things fall where they may.
