IMO if it has a filter or screen of any kind there is no good additive cause most

My tranny was starting to slip and I used Lucas Stop leak. It's a real thick petroleum based fluid. It's been just over a year since then and it's hasn't slipped since I added it. I know it's may not be a permanent solution but it at least put off a tranny rebuild for awhile. I'm interested in seeing how long it last before slipping again.
I read somewhere about Volvo or Saab requiring a special additive in their auto trans fluid. Something about, in the old days this additive was made from whale blubber, but now they have another source. Supposedly helps protect the oil from breakdown or something like that. Maybe it's all b.s. but I thought it was interesting.
Yeah there was a sperm whale oil additive which is no longer available. I think it improved shock load resistance. I believe it is in my 1970 Firebird Ram Air III's differential. Maybe I should drain it to sell on eBay!
Lube Guard claims to be identical to sperm whale, which was the hot stuff back in the 20's & 30's. Their promo stuff is worth a read. Makes you wonder about the advances in lube technology.
I did put some in my 96 F150 5.0L at last ATF change, as a friction modifier. Don't really know if it helped, but it did not hurt as I did an 11,000 mile trip, pulling a boat, to Alaska, and back. Did it cuz a Ford guy rec. a friction modifier, and this is the only one I found that seemed reasonable as I didn't need any leaks stopped.
I'd say rather than mixing and matching additives, go with Valvoline MaxLife ATF. The Maxlife oil smoothed my engine out a bit (but then again, it always runs better with Valvoline, period) and it seems to be slowing the oil pan gasket leak down a bit.
Just a thought.
EDIT: If your trans is perfectly healthy, no problems whatsoever, you might want to try Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF. That will make it last for quite some time.
If it were mine, however, I'd go with the Maxlife.
A couple of weeks ago i put the Lucas oil Tranny addtv in my 92 E40D, it made a nice difference, it is thick, kinda sticky fluid, my tranny was slipping and feeling kinda funky, this seems to have helped a lot! Will have to wait and see for how long!!
