Whaddya guys think? I've been seeing those magnets you stick onto the end of the filter to trap small metal particles inside of it. Sounds like a good idea, but is there any merit to the claims?
I would go with a magnetic drain plug before a filter magnet. With the filter magnet, The metal shavings have already gone thru the oil pump causing wear. I believe a good filter should catch anything that is big enough to cause any harm.
I have used rare-earth magnets for years on both the end of the oil filter and on the bottom of steel oil and transmission pans. The magnetic drain plug is also a great idea.
I prefer the disc type magnets, about 1/2" diameter by 1/8" thick. They are amazingly strong.
Here's a link to an example of what I'm talking about.
When I change the oil, I remove the magnets from the filter and pan, then stick them back on after the oil change. You will need a small screwdriver to help pry them off!
