I have a 78 f150 4x4 4 speed with warn lock out hubs. and have noticed the drivers side lock out keeps going from free to lock by its self every so often. the passangers side dose not do this. has any one had this issue before and know what causes it thanks.
X2 go ahead and take the locking hub off. Should just be 8 bolts. I'm wondering if a spring has broken allowing things to move when they shouldn't. I'm betting if you open it up you'll see a problem.
Sounds like you need to take the "lock mechanism" off and clean it..... grease it and put it back on.
When was the last time you packed your hubs?
I have not ever taken the drivers side appart. when I bought the truck in January. the po said the hubs were new. I took the passenger side hub appart to put new weel bearings in and it looked like the hub was fairly new. I'll take the other side apart this weekend. and repack it/see if anything is broken and see if that helps thanks for the advice.
I have found several times somebody just reaches down and locks the hub in while walking by. Never heard of one locking itself. but it may be possible if something was broken inside.
It's not uncommon for Warn hubs to move on their own. You need to grind the end of the axle stub.
I have never run into that before. I learned something today. My dad always told me to learn something new each day, but as old as i am it is getting harder to learn something new. ( that I can remember!!! LOL
