On the way back to Idaho from VA. In Iowa and noticed some "cogging" of the driveline as I backed out of a parking space at a DQ. At the stop sign the truck was doing the same thing while stopped. It seemed to clear as we got underway again. I sensed this happening earlier in the trip but it wasn't as prevalent so I blew it off.
Hope I can make it all the way back before anything serious happens. Interstate 80 is not where I want to be stuck on the side of the road... It's an automatic BTW.
When stopped the truck wants to move forward while in gear, but surges according to the rpm's. It only did it a couple of times and has been okay for the past 200 miles. I will continue to drive it home (as if I had a choice) and get it checked out there. Unless something happens on our last two days of travel....
Will check tranny fluid in the morning and monitor temps as we drive. Today was cooler and tranny temps were around 155 degrees. Yesterday it was much hotter and the temps were around 170. I drove today with the Tow/Haul mode employed the entire time. Before, I was using it only on the hilly sections. That may have been my problem? Hope no damage was done.
The motor is a beast. It has run like a fine tuned watch. I'll be due for an oil change after this 6000 mile adventure.
Shouldn't need it if you aren't hauling or towing. I'm not sure what would make the converter want to lock early like that. That may not be what is going on, just sort of sounds like it from your description. Maybe message Mark Kovalsky and get his input, he has a lot of transmission knowledge.
Check the transmission fluid with the trans fully warmed up, engine idling, trans in park.

You can't damage the trans by using or not using tow/haul.
I checked the fluid today, but not with the engine running in park. Will do tomorrow. At least we made it to Rock Spring WY today! Seems to be running fine except when I need to back out of a space, then it gets finicky. Not sure what to call its behavior at the moment, just not normal. I'm going to have it checked over thoroughly when we get home.
Fluid looked good, and was up on the stick in the warm range, but I will do the proper procedure tomorrow.
The motor runs great. It has been a bit tardy on starts once or twice, but not worried about it. Checked the EGR before we left home and it is pretty clean and dry.
180,000 miles and tranny oil last changed at 155,000. It’s time again. Last two cold starts have had extended crank times so I’ll be doing all new fluids and filters, oil, fuel and transmission. We’ll see how that impacts things. Things changed after I filled with biodiesel, so could have washed crud out of my tank? This truck keeps me busy!
