This morning I hit the key to start the truck and I get this funny sound form the starter. I hit it again and it fires up and off I go. I drive all day (about 150 miles) and no problem except this sound from under the truck. It sounds like a shock going over a bump.
Then on the ride home from work I notice my tanny temp is climbing! I get off the highway and on the final stretch to the house. I get stuck at a stop light. Now I hear a metal on metal grinding sound. Not real loud but easily noticable. I put it in neutral and the sound stops. I put it back in drive and she dies. I get it started and off the road but not before she dies a couple more times.
The tranny got up to 210 F according to the gauge. It cooled off real quickly. Fluid looks good. It was changed recently. The wife came over and we towed her the last 2-3 miles home. Now she sits in the road unable to run while in gear.
What did I lose? The torque convertor or the tranny?
Im certainly no expert but feel fairly certain it is the TC. The motor runs fine. The tranny was shifting like normal. Tried it again this morning and when I shift to R or D it kills the motor.
I have only a basic understanding of the TC and what it does but the way i understand it the TC disengages the tranny from the motor while at a stop. Is this correct?
I feel I am about to get edyoumicated on the TC/Tranny.

Yes, you are correct.
The engine is stalling because the torque converter is remaining locked. The problem could be low trans fluid, a bad solenoid in the trans, a stuck valve in the trans, or a bad torque converter.
As part of your education you'll find out which one it was. I can't tell from here.
I recently had mine stick on me also. By starting out in 1st gear then upshifting to
2nd or drive it unstuck and has been fine since. Not that I trust that as a permanent
fix but it works for me right now.
I think i am going to bite the bullet and get a whole new tranny/TC package. I use the truck for work travel and drive it to the ranch often this time of year. I don't want to be stuck on the side of the road in deep south Texas with no cell coverage and a busted tranny. Although unexpected, I have the funds to make it happen and if that means my tranny issues are gone for good then I think now is the time.
Merry Christmas to me! Do you think it will fit under the tree?
Sounds like a TC issue or a cracked flex plate. Call Brian at BTS since your just "right down the road in Texas"( that was tongue in cheek) and see what he has to say. or give David over at DI (diesel innovations) in Houston a shout.one or both may be able to help you.
I dropped the truck off at DI today. David should have me back in it Thursday. After hearing David describe the benefits of the new TC and tranny I am excited to drive her again. I should be for $4K! Thanks to all for your suggestions. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Eagerly awaiting the results. I have been deferring part of my paycheck for the last year saving up for the same deal you are doing. Please let us know how it all turns out. With that crew doing the job I have no doubt that it will be first class.
