Bug Deflecters
Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
Sorry for the delay... finally just got around to installing it yesterday... didn't fly off this morning on my way to work, so that's a positive.
I ordered directly from Weathertech. It's much cheaper from them, but they destroy you on shipping so you end up paying the same price as you do everywhere else. $99 no matter where it comes from. Came in a box that looked rather questionable, but everything was intact and there.
There is no double-sided tape with this one... uses two clips that go directly onto the edge of the hood that has a place to screw into and four pins that are screw in, not push in like most of them, similar to the ones in the bottom right of this image:
I totally see what everyone is talking about with them not fitting - too short, loose, etc. I think most people are probably just installing them incorrectly, though even when installed correctly, they leave something to be desired. If you aren't paying attention, you'll put the deflector under the weatherstrip, then put the pin through both of them and screw it down. Correct install is to separate the screw from the housing, put the pin housing through the plastic and into the hood, weatherstrip goes over top, then the screw goes through the weatherstrip and into the housing...
Incorrect - hood, deflector, weatherstrip, pin housing, screw
Correct - hood, deflector, pin housing, weatherstrip, screw
(sorry if that's confusing, I should have taken pictures)
Those screw pin things leave a lot to be desired. They fit ok, but you can't really secure them that well. I feel like regular push pins would be better... Screws go in, but you can't really tighten them... you really don't feel any difference in resistance between starting the screw and it being fully in... found myself giving some extra turns, which doesn't seem to ruin anything, but they're just crap in general. Overall it seems secure enough though I might look to upgrade.
The clips that go onto the edge of the hood don't give me the warm fuzzies either... they provide two pieces of clear plastic tape stuff that you put on to protect the paint before sliding the clip on. Really not crazy about that. I feel like over the years the vibrations are going to wear through that stuff and dig into the paint anyway. Time will tell I guess. One note on that tape... mine came stuck together and were a PITA to get apart. Static and the soft properties of the material likely to blame... I thought I only got one piece at first, before I realized the paper backing was on both sides. They did NOT want to come apart.
The little knobbies that protect your hood from the deflector flapping could have used better directions on where to put them. Should have just come on the deflector itself instead of making you put them on yourself, but not really a big deal... just push the thing against your hood, see where it touches, then put it on the point of contact. Instructions show putting all four on there, but I couldn't even get the thing to touch the hood except for the outer edges, so I only used two of them... if the middle of the deflector is slapping the hood, then I'm dealing with much bigger problems at that point...
Everything about the install is pretty straightforward... took me about 40 minutes, but I could have done it in less than 30 if I wasn't distracted (kid, dog, phone call, etc)...
