whatever you call them. not the flat, straigh up/down ones, but the ones that follow the contour of the hood a little bit. i think they're supposed to keep bugs, rocks, etc off the hood and windshield.
i've got one and had one on my previous truck. has anyone had enough experience both ways to say it does/doesn't work. i don't want to take it off and beat the crap out of the hood and windshield just to wish i had left it on.
at the same time, i don't see how it could do much. putting a little lip on a giant brick while pushing it through the air doesn't seem like it would help.
I personally don't think they do very much. I have one and I still get bugs on my windshield, although I could see how if a big rock were to come and try to chip the paint off my hood, it might lessen the odds of the happening. All in all, I mainly bought it because I think it looks better on these trucks, give them a meaner look. You can look at my before and after pictures to decide for yourself:

My vote goes towards Leave It On, although I do think it is almost functionless when trying to deflect bugs and debris.
I'd have to agree with the non-functional part of it, really. I don't have one and I don't have any problems with bugs on my hood much. It's more the windshield at speed when it looks like there's little bug bombs going off.
It's just a matter of personal taste as to whether you leave it on or off. I like the white truck posted without it and with that back cap.
I had a Lund bug shield on both my trucks, and they did a good job of protecting the leading edge of the hood from rock chips and such. They do not deflect anything away from the windshield however... I wasn't aware such claims were made, and if they are they are bogus.

Well put, it protects the leading edge of the hood, but not the windshield.

gotcha, thanks guys. i kinda like the pics without. so the paint on the hood looks good now. if i take it off, i guess it'll be plenty long before its beat to crap. by then i won't care anyway. i have enough scratches and a missing tailgate not to worry too much about it. i just didn't want to take it off and be scrubbing bugs off the windshield the rest of my life.
My opinion is: the bug shield is functional as it keeps the bugs off the front edge of the hood ,and small dust and rocks too. I just had my hood replaced and painted to match the color , it was nice and fresh , after the a month of driving I had a hard time getting the bugs off and noticed small chips already forming on the hood
They have some good looking bug guards out here I got mine off of the internet for 120$ and it is chrome matches real well with the chrome grill , I never liked the look of the black ones, just my 2 cents.

I run a few car washes here in MI and I can tell you that they will eventually break if you use automatic washes. It may not be the first or even the tenth time, but they do not stand up to automatic car washes. Also, we don't replace them since they are aftermarket. Buyer beware.
It would make me too nervous taking my truck through an automatic car wash anyway. I'm just afraid some metal rod or something is gonna break off and impale the truck bed. I'm just a worry wart 'cause it's my baby So I usually wash it myself.
Just drive your truck in a PA snow storm . The chips you don't "get" on your hood edge is worth it. I used to hate the shields and would have get my hood touched up or painted yearly. With em no problem keep rinsed our and remove and clean after winter no rust or chips.
As for bugs I'd rather clean bugs off shields than baked on hood . Here we have bugs hatching all time and there are days you would think it raining its so bad. I have had all types and none had said any thing about the windshield protection . But I will say I usually have more than 1 truck at time and the truck without shield has more big seam on windshield than one with.

my leading edge has many chips from rocks....if I had one I would definitely leave it on.
i agree too and have thought so every time you post a pic of it, but i just noticed a minute ago your above pic 1 vs pic 2...you're bumper's got that sag in the back.
my truck is far from perfect and yours is a lot cleaner than mine, but just something i noticed. add it to the list.
(hopefully that came off as a complement and a suggestion, not a criticism)
